The notion of ‘rite’ is used in reference to all of the prescribed gestures that take place in the carrying out of a religious ceremony. While the adjective ‘ritual’ is used to designate that which is involved in a rite, the substantive ‘ritual’ is an anthropological concept that refers more widely to a set of regulated and symbolic collective practices, both religious or secular, which characterize the life of a social group and participate in its cohesion.
